KLM Airlines Infant Policy

Infants aged from 0 to 23 months will be flying on KLM Airlines on their accompanying parent’s lap at an extremely discounted rate of infant ticketing and will not be given a separate seat. However, it should be noted that each parent can travel with a maximum of two infants; however, only one of them can be seated on the lap of the parent. Additionally, parents can also pre-book a bassinet, car seat, or CARES device for their child, who will have a separate baggage allowance.

Who is Considered to be an “Infant” by KLM Airlines?

The infant is considered to be such by KLM Airlines until the age of 23 months. This age is determined taking into account the age of the child during the whole journey, including the return flight. In case the child will reach the age of two before the return flight, the baby will have to pay the child fare for all flights included in the booking, and this kind of booking cannot be made online; you should call KLM directly.

An infant ticket can be booked from the moment of birth using his/her full legal name and date of birth as written on the travel documents.

KLM Infant Ticket Cost and Fare Information

In general, an infant under the age of 23 months does not get an assigned seat on a KLM airline since it is assumed that the child will fly on the lap of one of the adults. This service is provided at the significantly reduced infant ticket cost compared to the normal adult/child fares.

Fare information to remember:

• One lap infant per adult. An adult passenger may take along a maximum of two infants up to two years of age, but only one infant may sit in the lap of the adult during the flight.
• Second infant requires a seat. In case of travel with two infants without the presence of a second adult, a second seat must be purchased for the other infant at the corresponding child rate.
• More room? You have the option to purchase an extra seat for your lap-eligible infant. This cannot be booked via the KLM website; you must contact the KLM Customer Contact Centre, and the seat costs the regular child price (ages 2–11) and not the cheaper infant price.
• Your baby turns two during the trip? As mentioned above, the infant price discount does not apply once your child turns two on the travel dates.

Infants’ Baggage Policies on KLM

The baggage allowance depends on whether your baby travels on your lap or on a separate seat.

Lap infants (0-23 months, not occupying a seat):

• One piece of hand luggage for baby items, up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm, and maximum weight 12 kg, including baby food that can be eaten during the flight.
• Checked luggage allowance depends on the type of your ticket: with Basic and Light tickets there are no pieces of checked luggage for an infant, while other types of tickets have one piece of checked luggage up to 10 kg.

Infants with their own reserved seat:

• The same hand and checked luggage allowances as in the fare type you have bought for the seat.

Baby prams, strollers:

• Free carriage of one baby pram, stroller or baby back carrier per child.
• A small fully collapsible pram/stroller (up to 15 x 30 x 100 cm collapsed and up to 10 kg weight) is allowed to take to the gate and put in the cabin (if the space permits).
• Any other large or heavy prams/strollers and all baby back carriers should be checked in at the check-in counter.
• On KLM Cityhopper flights, all prams/strollers are taken to the hold of the aircraft at the gate.

Bassinets for Infants in KLM Planes

For international flights, KLM provides bassinets that can be installed on bulkhead seats, offering a comfortable space for your baby to sleep. To use this service, there are specific criteria:

• The baby should not have reached 1-year-old on the day of the flight.
• The baby’s weight should be below 10 kg.
• The baby’s height should be less than 65 cm.

Bassinets are available in limited quantities and cannot be reserved online. They can only be reserved by contacting the KLM Customer Contact Centre. Although KLM strives to provide you with the required equipment, it does not assure you of this before the boarding process.

Car Seats/CARES

KLM permits the use of one car seat or a Child Aviation Restraint System (CARES) device per child at no additional cost, but certain conditions need to be met:

• The child should have a seat reserved in order to use the car seat on board; otherwise, the car seat has to be checked in.
• The accompanying adult should own the car seat, as KLM Airlines does not supply or rent those.
• The car seat should be certified and come with the instructions confirming its compatibility with the 2-point airplane seat belt and should be installed within the space between the 42-cm wide armrests.
• Car seats cannot be used in Business Class on board Boeing 787 aircraft.
• Due to the limited seating with car seats, contact KLM no less than 48 hours before the flight in order to make a reservation of an appropriate seat.

Booster seats cannot be used in any case whatsoever, irrespective of the age of the child.

Required Documents and Booking Procedure

All infants should have their travel documents that will be valid during the flight and, if flying internationally, a passport may be required in addition to parental consent letters in case the child travels with one parent only.

Booking: Start your booking on klm.com or the KLM application, register your infant based on their accurate age at the time of both outbound and return flights, and the infant discount will be automatically applied in case your child qualifies for the lap infant position during the entire trip. An additional seat, a bassinet, or a car seat reservation should be made through the KLM Customer Contact Centre because these cannot be done via web.

• Bring your own baby food and formula – KLM excludes them from the standard 100 ml rule concerning liquid items in hand luggage.
• Ask for a bassinet or car seat reservation as soon as possible – they are limited in number.
• Put a change of clothes in your hand luggage for yourself and your baby.
• In case you are traveling alone with two infants, make sure to reserve the second seat in advance.
• Check in online 24-30 hours before the flight to choose family seats.
